Review and Giveaway: Win Parmela Parmesan style cheese from Vegan Perks!

February 27, 2013

Well we have survived the second round of snow. We got a foot last week and another foot over the last couple days. It’s been crazy! But that won’t stop me from doing a review and having a giveaway! So let’s hit it!

Most of us have that moment during our plant-based transition where we miss cheese but we usually get over it or find a good substitute. I have been fortunate enough to find great substitutes. Enter Parmela.

Parmela 1

I was contacted by Parmela Foods to try their vegan Parmesan style cheese and of course I said yes! I was excited but a little hesitant because the last Parmesan style cheese (who shall remain nameless) I tried, was not that great.

I knew I was going to use it on pasta because #1 – I love pasta and #2 – The only time I used real Parmesan cheese before I went vegan was on pasta so I wanted something familiar.

I decided break it open on my kale lasagna.  I put it on after the lasagna was already cooked so I didn’t cook the Parmela. I just sprinkled it on like I would regular Parmesan cheese. And… It was delicious! The texture and taste was perfect! Plus, it didn’t smell like feet! I also liked it because I like putting salt on my pasta and after using Parmela I didn’t even miss the salt. It added more flavor along with the Parmesan taste.

Parmela 1

I probably would have used more but I wanted you to be able to see that I was actually having pasta with my Parmela. 🙂

The only negative is that the container was not bigger. But I am a cheese hog and it might be a freshness issue if it was made in a bigger size. That being said, a little really does go a long way.

So overall I loved Parmela! It exceeded my expectations for a vegan Parmesan “cheese”.

The ingredients include: Almonds, Cashews, Nutritional Yeast, Soybeans, Salt, Tamari (Water, Soybeans, Salt), Lactic Acid (vegan)

As well as being vegan, Parmela is also gluten-free!
